“Biodegradable” means a material can be broken down by microorganisms. However, the term alone does not specify how long decomposition will take or what conditions are required. Some biodegradable plastics may also leave behind microplastics or other residue.

Certified compostable products must break down under specific composting conditions into natural elements such as water, carbon dioxide and biomass, without negatively affecting the finished compost.

Australian Compostability Standards

Australia has two main standards for certified compostable plastics:

AS 4736 – Commercial Composting

AS 4736-2006 applies to products designed for commercial or industrial composting facilities. These facilities use controlled conditions and higher temperatures to accelerate decomposition.

Products certified to AS 4736 may not break down effectively in a home composting system.

AS 5810 – Home Composting

AS 5810-2010 applies to products tested for home composting, where temperatures are lower and conditions are less controlled.

Home-compostable products must meet strict biodegradation, disintegration and compost-quality requirements. Always check the product packaging for the appropriate certification and disposal instructions.
